Imagine a solution for both dementia and depression that’s social, invigorating, and accessible. Our project explores the potential of cold-water swimming, combined with breathwork and mindfulness, to tackle these growing health concerns.
This innovative approach not only promotes inclusion by engaging isolated adults in a refreshing outdoor activity, but also champions a healthy lifestyle. Research suggests cold-water exposure may improve mood, alleviate depression, and even slow dementia progression.

COL.D.D. – D4.1 Research Paper
The COL.D.D. project (Cold Water Swimming for Dementia and Depression Prevention), funded by Erasmus+ Sport, investigates a non-pharmacological approach to promoting mental health and preventing age-related cognitive decline. The intervention combined mindfulness training with cold-water immersion to address depressive symptoms, anxiety, and executive functioning – three key risk factors in late-life mental health.
Across five countries (Italy, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic), 46 participants aged 45+ took part in ten structured workshops over five months, facilitated by psychologists and instructors. Standardized tools (Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Amsterdam Executive Functioning Inventory) and qualitative interviews measured outcomes.
Findings showed significant reductions in depression and anxiety, along with moderate improvements in executive functioning, particularly among middle-aged adults (45–59). Participants also reported greater energy, motivation, emotional balance, and life satisfaction.
The results suggest that body–mind interventions such as mindfulness and cold-water exposure can enhance resilience, mental well-being, and cognitive health in aging populations. The study highlights COL.D.D. as a replicable, low-cost, and culturally adaptable model for preventive health, with potential applications in community and public health programs.
